What staff augmentation means at Arcesso
Staff augmentation adds vetted engineers to your team while you keep control of the roadmap. You decide what gets built and in what order. The engineers join your Slack, your standups, your repo and your sprint board, and they follow your code review rules.
Arcesso handles the parts that slow hiring down. We source and vet the engineers, run the contract under US law, and assign a US-based lead who checks in with you every week. The lead watches for problems early: an engineer who is blocked, a skill gap, or a workload that has grown past the plan.
Staff augmentation suits teams that already have a product owner and a working process but not enough hands. A common case is a startup with a funded roadmap and two open roles that recruiting has not filled in three months. Another is a mid-market team adding its first AI feature and needing one engineer who has shipped LLM work before.
Staff augmentation vs dedicated team vs outsourcing
The three engagement models differ in who manages the work and who carries delivery risk. Staff augmentation gives you people to manage. A dedicated team gives you a stable unit with its own lead. Outsourcing gives you a result, scoped and priced up front.
Pick by asking one question: who will run the backlog day to day? If the answer is your product manager, staff augmentation fits. If you want a team lead to run it for you, choose a dedicated team. If you want a finished product or module with a date on it, outsource the project.
Many teams move between models over time. A common path is one augmented engineer for a pilot, then a dedicated team once the product has traction and a steady roadmap.
| Criteria | Staff augmentation | Dedicated team | Project outsourcing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who runs the backlog | Your product manager | Arcesso team lead, with your product owner | Arcesso, against an agreed scope |
| Team size | 1–3 engineers added to yours | 2–8 engineers as one unit | Sized to the project |
| How you pay | Monthly per engineer | Monthly per team | Fixed price or monthly |
| Who carries delivery risk | You | Shared | Arcesso |
| Best for | Filling open roles fast | Long-term product work | A defined product or module |
| Typical start | 2–4 weeks | 2–4 weeks | Kickoff within 14 days of signing |
US-managed vs offshore: what changes
A US-managed engagement changes who is accountable, which law applies and how fast problems get answered. Many staff augmentation vendors sell offshore or nearshore talent and manage it from abroad. Arcesso is a US company with offices in Jacksonville, Florida and Arlington, Texas, and every engagement has a US-based lead.
Here is what that means for you in practice:
- Your contract is with Arcesso LLC under US law, with IP assignment in writing from the first commit.
- Your lead works US business hours, Eastern and Central, so a question at 10 a.m. gets an answer the same day.
- Engineers overlap with your working day for standups, pairing and reviews.
- When an engineer is not working out, you raise it with one US-based person, not a ticket queue.
- A mutual NDA is in place within 24 hours of asking, before you share code or data.
Roles and stacks we place
Arcesso places engineers only in stacks our own team builds with every week. That keeps the vetting honest, because the people running the interviews do the same work. We do not list 25 languages to catch every search.
The roles we place most are AI and LLM engineers, full-stack web engineers on React, Next.js and Node, Python engineers on FastAPI and Django, mobile engineers on React Native and Flutter, and cloud engineers on AWS, Vercel and Supabase. Our AI engineers work with OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini and open-weight models, and with n8n and Make for automation.
If you need a stack outside this list, such as Java enterprise systems, .NET or embedded firmware, we will tell you on the first call and point you to a better fit. A shortlist from a vendor who cannot judge the work is worse than no shortlist.
Rates, ramp-up and replacement terms
Arcesso publishes its rates: vetted engineers under a US-based lead are $50 to $60 per hour, well below the comparable market figures on our pricing page. For market context, Clutch lists typical US software development firms at $50–99 per hour, based on verified client reviews.
Ramp-up follows a fixed path. You get a shortlist, you interview, you choose, and the engineer starts with access to your tools in the first week. Most engineers start 2–4 weeks after the discovery call. Kickoff timing is written into the agreement, so you can plan your sprint around it.
If an engineer is not the right fit, tell your Arcesso lead. The lead reviews the problem with you, agrees whether coaching or a replacement is the answer, and runs the handover so work does not stall. You can also scale the team down at the next monthly cycle.
When staff augmentation is not the right choice
Staff augmentation is the wrong model if nobody on your side can manage the engineers day to day. Added engineers need a product owner who sets priorities, answers questions and reviews work. Without that person, even strong engineers drift, and you pay for hours that do not move the product.
In that case, a dedicated development team with its own Arcesso lead is a better fit, or project outsourcing with a fixed scope and price. If you only need one small, well-defined feature, a fixed-price project usually costs less than a monthly engineer.
Staff augmentation is also a poor fit for a one-week task or for very low budgets. We would rather tell you that on the first call than start an engagement that will not work for you.
How we deliver staff augmentation
- 1
Discovery call
30 minutes, free
You talk to an engineer, not a sales rep. We cover the role, stack, seniority, hours and how your team works. If we are not the right fit, we say so.
Deliverable: Role brief and a fit decision
- 2
Shortlist of vetted engineers
About 1–2 weeks
We match engineers who have passed our technical vetting in your stack and share their profiles, past work and availability.
Deliverable: Shortlist with profiles
- 3
Interview before you commit
On your schedule, usually within a week
You interview each candidate the way you would interview a hire, including your own technical round. You commit only after you choose.
Deliverable: Your hiring decision
- 4
Onboard and start
First week
The mutual NDA and contract are signed, the engineer gets access to your repo and tools, and your Arcesso lead sets up a weekly check-in.
Deliverable: Onboarding checklist and first sprint plan
- 5
Monthly review
Every month
Your lead reviews output, blockers and fit with you, and you decide whether to scale up, scale down or keep the team as it is.

FAQ
Questions buyers ask us
How fast can an augmented engineer start?
Most Arcesso engineers start 2–4 weeks after the discovery call. That covers about 1–2 weeks to build a shortlist, a few days for your interviews and the first week of onboarding. The exact date depends on the role and on how quickly you can schedule interviews, and it is written into the agreement.
Do I get to interview engineers before I commit?
Yes. You interview every candidate before you commit, and you can run your own technical round. Arcesso shares profiles and past work first, so your interview time goes to the people most likely to fit. If no one on the shortlist is right, we build a new one.
What does staff augmentation cost?
Arcesso's published rate is $50 to $60 per hour per engineer, under a US-based lead, by role, seniority and hours. For market context, Clutch lists typical US software development firms at $50–99 per hour. You pay monthly per engineer once you have chosen a candidate and the engagement starts.
Who owns the code an augmented engineer writes?
You do. Arcesso assigns 100% of the code and IP to you from the first commit, in writing, and the engineer works in your repo, not ours. A mutual NDA is in place within 24 hours of asking, so you can share code and data safely before work begins.
What happens if an engineer is not a good fit?
Tell your US-based Arcesso lead. The lead reviews the problem with you within one business day, agrees whether coaching or a replacement is the answer, and manages the handover so your sprint keeps moving. You can also scale down at the next monthly cycle.
Are your engineers offshore or nearshore?
Arcesso is a US company with offices in Jacksonville, Florida and Arlington, Texas. Every engagement runs under a US contract with a US-based lead, and engineers overlap with US business hours for standups and reviews. We will tell you on the discovery call exactly where your engineers work.
Can I scale the team up or down?
Yes. Staff augmentation with Arcesso runs month to month. You can add an engineer when a new workstream opens, which typically takes 2–4 weeks, or reduce the team at the next monthly cycle. Your lead plans the handover so knowledge stays in your repo and docs.
