n8n vs Zapier vs Make for AI Automation: What We Use and When

n8n, Zapier and Make are workflow automation tools, and each suits a different AI automation job. Arcesso builds on n8n first for self-hosted, code-friendly AI workflows and uses Make for visual, lower-volume flows. Zapier is the right call when non-technical staff own the automation and need its large app library.

What n8n, Zapier and Make each do

n8n, Zapier and Make all connect apps and run steps when something happens, such as a new form entry, an email or a payment. They differ in who they are built for.

Zapier is the simplest. It is cloud only, built for non-technical users and known for the largest library of ready-made app connections. Make (formerly Integromat) is a visual builder with branching, loops and data mapping on a canvas, also cloud only. n8n is a source-available tool you can run on n8n's cloud or host yourself, with code steps in JavaScript or Python and built-in nodes for AI agents.

All three now add AI features, from calling a language model in one step to agents that choose which tools to use. The practical differences show up in hosting, code, data control and cost at volume.

Why n8n demand is rising fast

n8n is the fastest-growing of the three by search interest and freelance demand. On Google Trends, n8n rose about 1,889% relative to Zapier worldwide, comparing 2022 to 2023 with 2025 to 2026, and US interest in n8n passed Zapier in 2025 (15.2 vs 9.1 on the index). Make also rose about 1,029% from a smaller base, while Zapier stayed flat.

Marketplace data points the same way. Fiverr reported searches for n8n AI automation specialists up 125% between late 2025 and early 2026, and Malt, as compiled by 9am.works, reported n8n projects up 14 times. The n8n repository on GitHub has more than 207,000 stars.

Popularity is not a reason to pick a tool, but it does mean more community nodes, examples and engineers who know it.

n8n vs Zapier vs Make compared

The three tools differ most on hosting, custom code and how they bill. The table compares them on the same criteria for AI automation work. Check each vendor's pricing page for current plans, since tiers change often.

What Arcesso uses and when

Arcesso builds on n8n first for AI automation that touches customer data, runs at volume or needs custom logic. Self-hosting on the client's own cloud keeps data in their account, code steps handle the edge cases, and the bill does not grow with every task.

We use Make when the client's operations team wants to own and change the workflow themselves on a visual canvas, and volume is moderate. When a client already runs dependable Zapier automations, we keep them and connect new AI steps rather than rebuilding work that is not broken.

When the logic outgrows any workflow tool, we write it as code in Python or Node with the model calls, retries and tests in one place. Many projects end up with both: a workflow tool for triggers and simple steps, and a small service for the AI agent itself.

When not to use n8n

n8n is the wrong choice when no one will own it after launch. A self-hosted instance needs updates, backups, monitoring and security patches. If your team has no engineer or IT owner for that, use n8n Cloud or pick Zapier or Make instead.

  • Simple two-step automations run by non-technical staff: Zapier is faster to set up and easier to hand over.
  • An app that only Zapier connects to: rebuilding the connector in n8n costs more than the Zapier plan.
  • Teams that want to edit flows visually without touching code or servers: Make fits better.
  • Very high-throughput event processing or strict latency targets: write a service with a queue instead of any workflow tool.
  • Regulated data with no one to patch the server: an unmaintained self-hosted instance is a security risk, not a saving.

How to choose the right automation tool

Choose the automation tool by asking who will maintain it, where the data must live and how many runs a month you expect. Those three answers settle most decisions before features come into it.

If staff without coding skills will own it, start with Zapier or Make. If data must stay in your cloud, or volume is high, start with n8n. If the agent must make careful decisions inside your systems, put that logic in code and let the workflow tool handle triggers.

Arcesso can review your current automations and recommend a stack in a short, fixed-price discovery that is credited in full to any build. We will tell you if we are not the right fit, for example when a few Zapier steps already do the job.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask us

Is n8n better than Zapier for AI automation?

n8n is better than Zapier for AI automation that needs custom code, self-hosting or high volume, because you control the server and the model calls. Zapier is better for simple automations that non-technical staff own. On Google Trends, n8n interest rose about 1,889% relative to Zapier worldwide between 2022 and 2026.

Is n8n free to use?

n8n's self-hosted community edition can be used without a license fee for internal use under its source-available license, but you pay for the server, maintenance and your team's time. n8n Cloud and enterprise features are paid plans. Check n8n's pricing page and license terms for your exact use case.

Can Zapier or Make run AI agents?

Zapier and Make can both run AI steps and simple agents that call a language model and choose between connected apps. They work well for contained tasks such as drafting replies or sorting leads. For agents that need custom tools, strict permissions or evals, a code-based service or n8n gives more control.

Should I move my Zapier automations to n8n?

Move Zapier automations to n8n only when cost, data control or custom logic justify the work. If your Zaps run reliably and the bill is acceptable, keep them. Migration makes sense when task volume drives the bill up, when data must stay in your cloud, or when you need code steps Zapier cannot handle.
